Best projections suggest the Minnesota River will crest at Mankato on Saturday, but 2010 has been a weird year, said Public Information Officer Rebecca Arndt with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
"Usually in a flood year, Highway 19 to Henderson goes under water before Highway 93 (also to Henderson) does, but that wasn't the case this year," Arndt said. "This has been a strange year all over, so it's hard to predict what will happen."
The transportation department works closely with the National Weather Service and NOAA, which post and regularly update water levels at cities along the Minnesota River. The sites have been great, Arndt said, but the river is behaving in ways that can't be predicted.
The question of when the river will crest at St. Peter is a tough one. The answer is probably sometime this weekend.
Arndt said the biggest jump in the river level in our area came Wednesday evening and into the overnight.
