ST. PETER — Many truly unique things have helped put the city of St. Peter and it appear the St. Peter Recreation Department’s annual Halloween Fun Run & Walk can be added to that list.
This year a record-smashing 828 participants, a good number of them decked out in Halloween costumes, found their way to St. Peter for this event which was fun-filled for runners/walkers and spectators alike.
“This year’s event was a great success, with another record-breaking year of participants,” Lance Dlouhy, St. Peter Recreation Department’s Program Supervisor, said. “The weather held out for a great start and finish and the streets of St. Peter were filled with some the best, most creative costumes we have ever seen.”
The record-breaking 828 participants smashed the record set last year when 535 turned up for the event. Other prior year participation totals included: 315 in 2007, 211 in 2006, 159 in 2005 and 125 in 2004, the inaugural year of the Halloween Fun Run & Walk.
Proceeds from the event will go into the Recreation Department’s youth scholarship fund and participants also donated about 300 pounds of food to the St. Peter Area Food Shelf.
“We gave away over $3000 in prizes and giveaways,” Dlouhy said. “Special thank you to Public Works and the Police Department for maintaining the safety of the participants and to all of the volunteers who played such a critical role in the success of the event.
“It was great to see so many people not just from Minnesota but from all over the United States including the surrounding states and as far away as Texas and Wyoming come visit the great city of St. Peter.
“We cannot wait until the seventh annual where we hope to have another record-breaking year and will have even more fun than this year.”
