ST. PETER — An investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension into the shooting and subsequent death of Tyler Heilman, 24, of Kasota on July 20 has been completed.

Findings have been forwarded to the Anoka County Attorney’s Office for review.

Details of those findings have not yet been made available to the public.

Andy Skoogman, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, has stated it is now up to the Anoka County Attorney’s Office on what course of action will be taken.

Tyler Heilman was shot and killed before 5 p.m. on July 20 by Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd Waldron during an altercation near a Kasota apartment complex where Heilman resided.

Waldron, who was in plain clothes, had confronted Heilman after having witnessed him driving erratically a short time before the incident. A struggle ensued, resulting in the shooting death of Heilman.

Authorities at the time said they expected the investigation into the shooting to take six to eight weeks.

Friends and family members of Heilman have been picketing outside the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office, most recently on Sunday, because they say they want answers about why he had to die. They’re hoping to expedite the release of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigators’ findings on the series of events that led to Heilman’s death.
