St. Peter boys soccer team has 2-0-1 week
The St. Peter boys soccer team had three games in four days in its second week of competition. South Central Conference opponent Fairmont traveled to the Gustavus Adolphus College fields for the first match of the week, having lost their opener to Southwest Minnesota Christian, then defeating Mountain Lake Christian. The Saints lost their opener to the Marshall Tigers.

Raiders’ speed burns Clippers 35-8
Nicollet junior quarterback Sean Murphy is small, but he put on a big show on a big stage, with help from his friends, in leading the Raiders to a 35-8 season opening victory over the Clippers Thursday night at Hollingsworth Field on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.

St. Peter girls soccer team outscored its opponents 15-2 in finishing 3-0 and repeating as champs in the St. Peter Tournament Friday and Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Two St. Peter girls earned medals in the season opening high school cross country meet, the Early Bird Invite, on Friday.

Pietila wins 10th-grade run
In his first cross country meet, St. Peter’s Nick Pietila won the championship in the 10th-grade race Friday in the Early Bird Invite. His time over 5,000 meters was 15:34. There were 19 finishers.

St. Peter tennis starts 1-1
The St. Peter girls tennis team opened the season last week splitting two non-conference matches. United South Central edged the Saints 4-3 at Wells. The Saints bounced back to beat Le Sueur-Hendeson 5-2 on Thursday at Le Sueur.

Boys soccer team plays on big-time field

These were words repeated often by the St. Peter boys soccer players as they entered Southwest Minnesota State University Regional Event Center, Mattke Field. (A $16 million Regional Event Center, which opened in 2008. $11 million was provided in the same legislative bill that built the Minnesota Gopher football stadium, and $5 million matched by Schwan’s Inc.

The St. Peter volleyball team began the season with a pair of 3-0 losses.
Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial beat St. Peter 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 in the opener Friday at St. Peter.

Cleveland volleyball shoots for more wins
Cleveland volleyball team won one match in 18 tries last year.
“We’re going to learn how that felt and use it as more intensity and drive to do better this year,” senior co-captain Emily Dummer said. “We have some younger girls up, and we’re going to try and make it all work and do a lot better.”

Over-35 Saints bounce back at state tourney
The first two rounds are history as the defending state Class AA champion St. Peter Saints, seeded No. 2, were upset by the No. 15 seeded Menahga Relics 4-2 on Saturday and defeated the No. 10 seeded Perham Silver Pirates 5-4 on Sunday in the state senior mens over-35 amateur baseball tournament.

Boys soccer captains provide good role models
The captains on the St. Peter boys varsity soccer team make a commitment to the coach, and the team, when they sign the Captain’s Guidelines and hand it over to head coach Jason Tompkins. The coach’s expectations for players are high, and the captains are expected to be the player role model for the team, and also take on leadership roles for off season and preseason, for practices and game days.

Junior Sidney Dirks is the top singles player on the St. Peter girls tennis team. Junior Rachael Thompson is the Saints’ best doubles player. They, along with senior Makenzie Scholtz, are the captains.
