St. Peter, Cleveland One-Acts ready for Sub-Sections
St. Peter High School’s One-Act Play production will take part in this Saturday’s Section 2A, Sub-Section 6 Contest at Le Sueur-Henderson High School.
A year ago, the Saints nabbed the top spot at the Sub-Section 6 contest to advance to the Section 2A Contest, which will be held this year on Saturday, Feb. 4, also at Le Sueur-Henderson High School.
Cleveland High School’s One-Act Play, under the direction of Amy Tolzman, will also take part in the Sub-Section 6 contest. The Clippers finished second and also advanced to the Section 2A Contest.
The first show is slated to begin at 9:15 a.m. with Cleveland slated to go in the morning and St. Peter in the afternoon.
This year the Saints’ cast and crew will stage “War at Home” by Nicole Quinn and Nina Shengold.
It’s described as “A group of students in a New York State high school north of Ground Zero responds to the events of September 11th, 2001.”
The text of this ensemble piece was created from journal writings of over 40 students, teachers, and community members in the weeks immediately following 9-11.”
After a public performance on Monday and a Tuesday performance for the St. Pete Middle School play cast and crew, the St. Peter crew will fine-tune its performance in preparation for Saturday’s contest.
“I decided to do a historical drama this year for a change,” St. Peter One-Act Director Lyn Vavreck said. “Being the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, ‘War at Home’ seemed like a timely choice.
“What I really like about the script is the way it combined these writings into characters with distinct personalities. Although the piece is based on a collection of journals, the play is not just a marathon of individual monologues. It has a great variety between very touching monologues, interactive scenes, and light hearted scenes. It also delves into controversial issues that confronted this country after the attacks.
“I was surprised by how little the students remembered about 9/11, but they were very young at the time. Most of their memories center on how they remember their parents reacting.
“It’s been an emotional journey into how teenagers felt about 9/11 and the variety of reactions people have to trauma in their lives.”
